Murthy: Kaylee’s Beloved Doodle and Surviving Companion

Murthy, a sweet and lively doodle, was much more than a pet to Kaylee Goncalves and her former partner, Jack DuCoeur—he was family. Murthy’s days were filled with affection, play, and adventure, splitting his time between Kaylee’s home at 1122 King Road and Jack’s house just down the road. Kaylee’s social media captured countless joyful moments of her and Murthy together—snuggling in bed, dancing, and playing, with Kaylee teaching Murthy the same dance she once did with her previous dog.

Murthy’s Life at 1122 King Road

Murthy was a familiar and comforting presence among the housemates, often seen exploring the backyard or curling up with Kaylee. Friends fondly recall his playful spirit and the special bond he shared with Kaylee, who always included him in her daily activities and social media posts. Sometimes, Murthy would wander into the trees behind the house, ignoring calls to return—behaviour familiar to many dog owners, like my dog who is a Patterdale terrier and has selective hearing, especially when he wants to explore!

The Weekend of the Tragedy

During the weekend of November 12–13, 2022, Kaylee was visiting the house, and Murthy was by her side. Details about where Murthy stayed that Saturday night are unclear. According to surviving housemate Bethany Funke, around 2:30 a.m. she and Maddie (Madison Mogen) took Murthy outside before bed. Later, Maddie mentioned to Bethany that they couldn’t find Murthy, but what happened next remains uncertain.

Surveillance from a nearby house recorded a dog barking between 4:16 and 5:00 a.m., which many believe was Murthy. When police arrived, Murthy was found in Kaylee’s room, safe and uninjured, even after hours alone in the house during an unimaginable tragedy.

After the Incident

Murthy was described by officers as timid but unharmed. He was taken into care by animal control and, after some initial confusion at the kennels, was promptly reunited with Jack DuCoeur later that day. There is no evidence Murthy was harmed or involved in the events, and law enforcement confirmed he had no injuries or forensic significance in the case. Although, there is no evidence in documents that Murthy was ever swabbed for evidence, and nothing is listed under the evidence collected and stored in the LE released evidence index document.

Murthy Today

Murthy continues to live with Jack, surrounded by love and care. He is a living reminder of Kaylee’s affection and the happiness she shared with those around her. Murthy’s resilience and gentle presence are a comfort to those who loved Kaylee, and he remains a symbol of hope and enduring companionship amid loss.
